<image:caption>Keyla's take on qualities of being Honduran: Hospitality. Hard working. Entrepreneurial. When asked about what an ideal Honduras needs, Keyla looks straight at Camila, her 13 year old daughter who quietly sits by her side. I'm sitting on the opposite side of her and even though I can't see their eyes I know Keyla's silent stare means 'pay attention, this is for you.' Keyla then turns to me and in her gentle, melodic voice says, "we need to teach our youth that their dreams are achievable. Why do something to make money that won't make you happy?"</image:caption>

      <image:title>Honduras_101 - 002: Keyla & Kolibríes</image:title>
<image:caption>Since that night, Keyla has not stopped painting and it is almost in disbelief that she narrates once having only four painted shirts when she was invited to showcase her work at an artesanal fair in Cedros, a small town two hours from Tegucigalpa, where she lives. The four shirts had been commissioned so she initially declined her attendance at the event because she had no other garments to sell. The lady inviting her insisted that it might be a good opportunity to get additional exposure. One of her neighbors and friend lent her a table and offered to join her. Her sister, who also went with her, lent her a Lenca tablecloth. And just like that, on somewhat of a whim, Keyla drove the four shirts she had already sold to the fair. She got in the best type of trouble possible when a woman who was visiting from abroad asked to buy the four shirts. She sold them and went back home to figure out how to quickly paint four more shirts. Her business has grown organically: first demand, then a facebook page, then customer loyalty, and now a catalog. She has struggled with the formal business registry, which has kept the business from scaling.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Honduras_101 - 003: Rodrigo & Primero Café - rodrigo, the coffee hunter</image:title>
<image:caption>Rodrigo's take on qualities of being Honduran: Charming. Resilient. Entrepreneur. On a likely steep hill in the Honduran countryside runs a kid yelling "Mamá, viene el señor del café." Rodrigo feels strange to be called 'señor'. The word conveys an older, perhaps stern man so, for a minute, he reflects on his trajectory to determine if the title fits. Before he reaches a conclusion, Rodrigo arrives at the kid's home and is reminded that he is there to collect coffee for 'Primero Café'. Primero Café is the business Rodrigo started with his brother Randal and their mother, Nora, after their attempt at growing plantains in 2020 first flooded during hurricane Eta and then two weeks later vanished after Hurricane Iota. Although Randal has a degree in agriculture and Rodrigo has a liking for permaculture, he admits that the three of them knew little about coffee. Despite this, Randal and Rodrigo heeded a suggestion from a friend of their mother's to meet with coffee producers in the western department of Copán.</image:caption>

<image:title>Honduras_101 - 003: Rodrigo & Primero Café - "You are as good as those who you know"</image:title>
<image:caption>In telling the story about how Primero Café developed, Rodrigo tells the story about a woman he met in 1999 through a student exchange program he participated in. After many years of silence among them, her concern about the hurricanes that hit Honduras in 2020 created an opportunity for them to catch up. During their virtual coffee, he happened to mention he was now embarking in the coffee business. She also just happened to mention that a good friend of hers who just happened to be in her town because of the lockdowns in Europe just happened to be a world-renowned award-winning Italian roaster. Rodrigo just happens to now be in touch with him. Similar things occurred when he just happened to run into a former schoolmate who just happens to own a coffee farm or when he just happened to mention the business to his neighbor who just happens to run the convention center where Primero Café is now sold.</image:caption>

Viktor was 16 when he decided that he would someday own a gym in the Miraflores neighborhood of Tegucigalpa. It was the 90s and the desolate hills of Miraflores were where youth spent their late evenings partying and contemplating the horizon of the city and of their lives. In the years that followed, Viktor became a husband, father, psychologist, heavy metal musician, bodybuilding world champion, and - like he likes calling himself - “administrator”of the gym God gave him in Miraflores, called God's Gym.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Honduras_101 - 005: Catherine y Contracorriente - Contracorriente</image:title>
